 Exodus: Gods and Kings, out Friday, stars Christian Bale as Moses in the Biblical epic, opposite Joel Edgerton as his brother and ruler. Also starring John Turturro, Ben Mendolsohn, Ben Kingsley, Aaron Paul and Sigourney Weaver, Ridley Scott's adaptation of the Israelites' journey out of Egypt is updated with 3D technology.     “I’ve held back a bit – wait till you see the movie. You must never oversell yourself. You’ve got to wait till you’re three weeks out, then you go for it. This is a big movie. 1300 effects shots is a lot. Not compared to something like Star Wars, sure, but we’re not ‘effecty’ in that sense of the word. One of the things that has come off really well is the reality of the characters. You wouldn’t call it an effects film even though in many ways a lot of what was needed is extraordinary. There were things I couldn’t build. But in today’s world the effects are so good that it looks real, effectively.”

Lastly, although Scott feels that the Gods and Kings subtitle is appropriate given the content of the film, he’s also admitted that the only reason it was tacked onto Exodus was because of a rights issue – as opposed to, it being a more strictly creativity-motivated decision.

    “Honestly, to be truthful, we’d have liked to just call this Exodus, but that was owned and nobody would give it up, so I had to use Gods And Kings. But I don’t mind Gods And Kings, because in effect that’s what we’re dealing with: a society who at one stage believed in the idea of over a thousand gods, which is of course hard to believe.”

Rounding out the cast of Exodus: Gods and Kings are such acting folk as Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar), John Tuturro (Transformers: Dark of the Moon), Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), and Ben Mendelsohn (The Place Beyond the Pines).

Watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya Movie Streaming Free,  But Kaguya hates the mannered, artificial life of a noblewoman of the Heian period (794-1185 C.E.). She rebels against the tutoring of Lady Sagami, who attempts to teach her to walk, stand and sit formally, and to pluck her eyebrows and blacken her teeth (which was fashionable at the time). Instead of the simple cotton clothes that allowed her to run and climb in her native hamlet, she’s weighted down in layers of silk and brocade kimonos. She also misses Sutemaru, a character Takahata added to the story. A handsome, good-natured young peasant, he and Kaguya shared adventures and friendship in their rural village.

Although she fulfills her adopted father’s dream by attracting noble suitors, Kaguya rejects their offers of marriage, recognizing the flawed characters their exquisite manners conceal. Despite the efforts of Sanuki and the other mortals, Kaguya must eventually fulfill her destiny by returning to her true home, the moon. In the court of the Moon King, she will forget everyone and everything she knew on Earth.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a ravishingly beautiful film. The characters, who look like they were drawn with traditional ink brushes, are colored in delicate pastels. Instead of hyper realistic CG landscapes or fully realized paintings, the backgrounds suggest minimal watercolor sketches. A small of area of lavender may suggest the crest of a distant mountain or the petals of a flower, framed by empty white paper.
 Like the other recent Studio Ghibli features, the animation is more polished than most Japanese films. Kaguya initially moves with the delightful clumsiness of a real infant. But as she learns aristocratic postures, she subtly swings her long sleeves to keep the layers of fabric correctly positioned. The grace of the animation makes the news about restructuring at Ghibli all the more worrisome: to break up the talented crew they’ve assembled would be a loss to the Studio and to the art of animation.

Princess Kaguya moves at a deliberate pace, very different from the whizz-bang tempo of American animation. Takahata breaks that measured rhythm once: When her frustration with the formal sterility of urban life overcomes her, Kaguya escapes to the village where she grew up, leaving a trail of torn finery in her wake. The animation is rougher, faster and more dynamic, reflecting the wretched Kaguya’s sense of imprisonment. Like a real-time gesture in a hypnotically slow Noh play, the escape sequence seems more exciting in contrast to the quieter movements surrounding it.

US audiences may grow impatient with the stately rhythm of  The Tale of Princess Kaguya. But viewers who accept the film on its own terms will enjoy a rewarding viewing experience that reminds them just how protean and beautiful the art of animation can be.

The woodcutter and his wife raise the child as best they can – they call her Princess, although the local children prefer Little Bamboo, because she grows at fearsome speed. When a cache of gold and fine fabrics is discovered in the same bamboo grove, the woodcutter and his wife decide the gods must want their girl to be raised as a noblewoman, so they start a new life in the city, in a lavish mansion, surrounded by handmaidens who glide around like teardrops wrapped in silk.

Various princes try their best to woo the princess, who has now been given the name Kaguya, after reaching her teenage years in the space of a few weeks. The Tale of Princess Kaguya But courtly life soon loses its appeal, and Kaguya pines for her simpler, country life – as well as wondering when the spirits that first placed her inside that bamboo shoot will come back to reclaim her.

Like Miyazaki’s final film, this feels like an intensely personal project for Takahata. The hillsides and forests of its early scenes recall Heidi, A Girl of the Alps, an animated series on which he and Miyazaki collaborated in the Seventies. (The baby princess moves exactly like babies do, and the way she toddles after frogs and nuzzles wild piglets is impossibly cute.)

Then, in its later scenes, the film becomes a kind of Buddhist Close Encounters of the Third Kind: as intensely but playfully spiritual as Takahata’s not-widely-seen-enough 1994 film Pom Poko, with flying arrows transformed into garlands of flowers, and dreamy flights across meadows and lakes, while larger themes of mortality and impermanence are also addressed.

There are certainly lulls in the film’s middle act, as Kaguya wrestles with the various niceties of life at the medieval Japanese court, and at more than two hours, the tale as a whole feels slightly overextended. But for the most part, this is a rich and astonishing swan song for Takahata, whose love of mischief and tender, expressionistic style have been essential steering forces at Studio Ghibli.

CG animation dominates American theaters. For the most part, it's gorgeous — crisp, kinetic, and mind-bogglingly photo-realistic. It's hard to know what we're missing... until something like Isao Takahata's The Tale of Princess Kaguya enters view. Rendering a 10th century Japanese folktale in bustling watercolors, Takahata's fifth film for Studio Ghibli is a painterly meditation on youth, maturity, and death.

The film stands apart from the crowd, compared even to Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki's acclaimed slate, in both artistry and narrative. After clearing tears from your eyes, you'll see the bar for homegrown cartooning set to a new height. The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a pinnacle of animation in the new millennium.

While walking through a bamboo grove, Okina discovers a magical shoot bearing a baby girl. Believing her to be a gift from the gods
Kaguya with his wife. Her magic is evident: In only a few short days, the girl grows from a Thumbelina-sized babe to an infant to a agile young sprite. Kaguya takes to the flora and fauna of the Earthly world, palling around with fellow farm kids and taking a special liking to the oldest boy, Sutemaru. It's clear she's not one of them — when the scamps launch into a traditional nursery rhyme, Kaguya enters a trance, extrapolating the song with ancient words — but she's at peace. Everything is perfect.

Still, Okina sees room for improvement. Returning to the grove, the cutter is gifted once again with a life-changing stash of gold. With the lottery win, Okina uproots his family to the capital, showering Kaguya with fine linens, musical instruments, and a etiquette coach who will transform her into a proper princess. Kaguya is devastated. She rapidly matures into a teenager, trying to adjust to the new lifestyle, but it's no use. Depression sets in, compounded by Okina insisting she find a husband. Forced on to a regal path, Kaguya's demise is written in the stars.
